Mom Finds Alcohol In Son's Car

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Jane Hambleton has dubbed herself the "meanest mom on the planet."

After finding alcohol in her son's car, she decided to sell the car and share her 19-year-old's misdeed with everyone -- by placing an ad in the local newspaper.

The ad reads: "OLDS 1999 Intrigue. Totally uncool parents who obviously don't love teenage son, selling his car.

Only driven for three weeks before snoopy mom who needs to get a life found booze under front seat. $3,700/offer. Call meanest mom on the planet."

Hambleton has heard from people besides interested buyers since recently placing the ad in The Des Moines Register.

The 48-year-old from Fort Dodge says she has fielded more than 70 telephone calls from emergency room technicians, nurses, school counselors and even a Georgia man who wanted to congratulate her.

"The ad cost a fortune, but you know what? I'm telling people what happened here," Hambleton says. "I'm not just gonna put the car for resale when there's nothing wrong with it, except the driver made a dumb decision.

"It's overwhelming the number of calls I've gotten from people saying 'Thank you, it's nice to see a responsible parent.' So far there are no calls from anyone saying, 'You're really strict. You're real overboard, lady.'"

The only critic is her son, who Hambleton says is "very, very unhappy" with the ad and claims the alcohol was left by a passenger.

Hambleton believes her son but has decided mercy isn't the best policy in this case. She says she set two rules when she bought the car at Thanksgiving: No booze, and always keep it locked.

The car has been sold, but Hambleton says she will continue the ad for another week -- just for the feedback.

Saw this on the news......totally agree with this mom.....if more parents gave a crap this way...maybe ppl like me and others on this site wont be woke up in the wee hrs of the morning and scraping them up from a DUI MVC or better yet, cleaning up an innocent victim and watching the drunk driver walk fully intact, unhurt to the police crusier! This topic is very close to my heart and this past summer nearly lost 2 ppl locally that i know from a repeat offender with drinkng and driving and yet, he still walks the roads, drives and what not....thanks to an EXCELLENT legal system that seems to cater to the bad guys! So parents who take a role and responsiblity to their children with issues like this....GOOD FOR THEM I say and they are the ppl who are MY HEROS!

I applaud her! Standing O!!
... and here I thought I was the meanest Mom... I bought my son a car and gave it to him on Valentines Day 2006. My rules weren't followed either, and being the softy that I am, he even got the 3 strikes option (only because nothing alcohol related was involved...that's a zero tolerance subject with me too)... anyway, long story short, he used all 3 strikes, and needless to say, it's no longer his car.
Difference is, I didn't sell it... it sits in the driveway as a reminder to him that when Mom speaks, dam it, you better be listening, because she means what she's saying.

Good for you gurlie! More parents should be like you, instead of catering to their kids; which is the reason they're so spoiled and without direction in the first place. The government along with the nay-sayers have stripped parents of their rights to parent! A big standing O to you too hunny gurl!

Iplan on following my parent's idea....when i got my first car, it was cause I BOUGHT, I PAID the INS, and I was responsible for everything with the car.....basically...if you have to foot all cost, it did make me more responsible then if they had handed me the wheels and covered the Ins...i guess because i was working it also meant i was more mature and was holding down a job. I know thats not always the way....but it worked in my case
