A portable fire extinguisher can save lives and property by putting out a small fire or containing it until the fire department arrives. But when it comes to extinguishers, one type does not fit all. There are five primary types of fire extinguishers, each designed to put out different kinds of fires:
There are also multi-purpose fire extinguishers that might be labeled “B-C” or “A-B-C”. These are best suited for home use and can be found at most home improvement stores.
Before you consider using an extinguisher there are some very important details to remember:
Good morning Capt Lewis and all,
I do need much more help in re fire extinguisher selection.
My concern is not my home; it's when I'm on the road as a responder going to an assembly area. This travel involves motels, small airports and highway rest areas.
What is the current status of the halon extinguisher? I've known they were prohibited in the US since circa 1973 except for aircraft (....and for expensive hospital equipment ?).
Besides the big box stores, is there a type of store that handles a variety of extinguishers NOT for the professional member of the Fire Service but rather for trained responders ?
Thanks in advance.
Greetings Bob, welcome to USFRA.
Halon extinguisher use has not be prohibited, however, it's no longer in production. The EPA recognizes that that Halon remains the most effective "clean" extinguishing agent available, despite its ozone depleting potential, and there are no federal or state regulations prohibiting the buying, selling or use of Halon extinguishers. All Halon available now is recycled so it is an environmentally responsible choice.
Any ABC extinguisher is a valuable asset to any First Aide-First Responder kit or gear bag. The "big box" stores is also the best place to purchase an extinguisher (it's where I purchase mine for my vehicle and the home). There's nothing special or different about purchasing from a fire-related store than the price.
I hope that answers your questions.
I would also like to thank you for the questions of Halon. Now I plan to do a little research and write an article in the near future.
Have a safe week.
