(AP) Updated at 7:54 a.m. EST - LOS ANGELES - Twelve more suspected arson fires broke out early Monday in the Los Angeles area, and a "person of interest" was taken into custody for questioning in connection with the dozens of suspicious car fires that have hit city since last week.
The developments came a day after police distributed DVDs featuring footage of a man between 20 and 30 years old with a receding hairline and a shoulder-length ponytail. He was seen on grainy surveillance video Saturday after emerging on foot from inside an underground parking structure on Hollywood Boulevard where a car fire was reported.
Fire department spokesman Capt. Jaime Moore said it was too soon to say whether the "person of interest" was the man seen on the video footage. "It's still too early to say whether or not this person has any direct correlation to the fires," Moore said.
No arrests had been made.
Early Monday, firefighters battled 12 suspected arson fires at carports and garages. Ten occurred in Los Angeles and two were in West Hollywood, Moore said. They broke out shortly after 1:30 a.m.
Moore said authorities believe the fires were connected to the earlier blazes, which now stand at 55.
Most of those fires were set in parked cars. In several cases, flames have jumped to carports and apartment units.
A reward of $60,000 has been offered for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the arsonist.
Authorities haven't said how the car fires were sparked or what was collected at the crime scenes. They were unsure if the rash of fires were the work of one arsonist or multiple people or copycats.
There have been no injuries.

Too bad he wasn't Mexican or a Muslim, there wouldn't have been an issue.
Another update: Granted it is via Hollywood, but TMZ is a pretty good source of info. Hahaha.
A TMZ producer was in the parking garage where the prime arson suspect was captured on surveillance video Friday ... and just an hour before a car in the garage was ignited, the producer saw ANOTHER man casing the vehicle.
Three law enforcement agencies have contacted our producer multiple times since the incident, asking him numerous questions about what he observed.
The producer was going to the gym in the building at around 6 PM on Friday. As he tried to find a parking space ... he saw a gray, 1990s Monte Carlo blocking a car that was about to be torched. There were 2 people in the Monte Carlo -- a driver and another man who was tampering with the vehicle that would soon explode in flames. Our producer says both men appeared to be in their 20s. He could not ID the driver, but says the man tampering with the car had long-ish black hair, which was NOT in a ponytail.
The producer went to the gym, and an hour later ... as he drove past the targeted car, it exploded in flames.
Our producer called LAPD and told them what he saw. He then received numerous calls from detectives and fire chiefs. Authorities described the man who would become the prime suspect Harry Burkhart -- the man with the ponytail -- but our producer said that was NOT the man he saw tampering with the car.
LA City Fire Department Captain Jamie Moore tells TMZ ... the investigation is still active and they are not ruling out accomplices.
