Finding a chaplain or clergy member within your local community is always helpful. Before I came a minister, our small fire department used a methodist minister from our small town, he did very well and also became a very active fireman & EMT. I think many community clergy would like to become involved, but without the requirements that are needed for fire/ems. God Bless to each of you.

Our Chaplain is a volunteer fire fighter member of our combination fire dept. We pray before every meeting. I find it reasuring that our dept is not afraid to show their feelings towards God and afirm his almighty power and control over all things. When we have a grievious incident, a grief session is held where all involved can express their feelings, thoughts, and concerns. May God be with us all. Have a happy and safe 4th of July.

In my case it was me who approached the department. In fact I discussed the possibility with several local first response agencies, and the state police (DPS.) The local fir department was the most receptive, and the on ethat seemed the best "fit" with what I had to offer. In fact my status with them won't be official until a department vote next Thursday. It took me several months of study and conversations to get to this point.

As far as the department recruiting someone the International Conference of Fire Chaplains makes the following suggestions,

1) Contact nearby departments, fire department chaplains, or the federation of fire chaplains. ( New York also has a state fire chaplains association.)

2)Look within your department for a member who may be a minister.

3)Check with your local minsterial alliance.

4)Consider your own knowledge of a clergy person who might be good for your department.

5)Appoint a committee to seek out candidates.

6) Don't overlook those clergy persons members of your department are most often calling for assistance.

These should give you a beginning but bear in mind you will likely get someone with a strong theological background, but will need additional training in Critical Incident Stress, Fire Service Customs and operations etc.

I believe our department has only one dept chaplain and he/she is appointed. But, the chaplain isnt a "certified" chaplain, he is actually a past chief from a Long Island Dept with about 30+ years experience who also doubles as the Fire Police Capt, and he says the prayer before our meetings...I wish we had a dedicated Chaplain from a local church, someone trained to deal with emotions and tragedies like you all are. How can I go about doing that Rev Crutchfield? (or any Pastor, Reverend, Father, Priest on here! lol) Any advice would be appreciated.
