FEMA recently released the third edition of Publication 1 (Pub 1) and invites the whole community, including individuals and organizations, to read the new publication to better understand FEMA’s mission and role in emergency management.
Per FEMA's site...
FEMA first published Pub 1 in 2010 and updated it in 2016. The intent of this new 2019 version is to reinvigorate FEMA employees by reaffirming who we are as federal leaders in emergency management, instill a renewed sense of pride in the Agency, and explain what we do to help people before, during, and after disasters.
Who We Are: An understanding of our identity and foundational beliefs
Why We Are Here: A story of pivotal moments in history that have built and shaped our Agency
What We Face: How we manage unpredictable and ever-evolving threats and hazards
What We Do: An explanation of how we help people before, during, and after disasters
How We Do It: An understanding of the principles that guide the work we do
Pub 1 will provide partners and the public with an understanding of the agency and a framework for the whole community to unite in purpose and mission.
... and below has some thoughts from Acting FEMA Administrator Pete Gaynor.
Thanks for sharing Janet. I did Disaster Housing Inspection for several disasters as a contractor (Through Parsons Brinkerhoff) and while sometimes FEMA gets a bad rep - all in all, FEMA serves a vital purpose and role.
I was dispatched to Florida for one huricane in 2004 - ended up staying for all four and came home 3 months latter. Also dispatched for Catrina---that one was very sad.... not that the others weren't but Catrina was a "SPECIAL" sad one.
