Well, well, well, it's about time you started a group that worth a damn.

There definitely are times when sheer gall will win the day - he probably figured you either WERE crazy (in which case more dangerous than he was), OR you had a hidden weapon of some sort, maybe worse than his. Any case, it worked - and a great story, especially the "unintended (but positive!) consequences" of your press debut!

My First Dealings with the Press
Back when I was Young and dirt was new there was a shooting right infront of my house when I was raking my front lawn

I ran in, dialed 911, ran out, told the shooter who was about the finish off the victim to put the weapon down and leave. Just about then I was at the wrong end of a silver plated revolver and instantly realized I took a pair of balls to a gun fight with no backup.

However a pair of balls beats 5 aces most of the time and the shooter did just that. Hearing the call over the PD radio the local CBS news team raced to the scene and stuck a microphone in my face after I tended to the victim. ( Who had a small caliber bullet in each calf from kicking up in defense )

I explained in very generic terms what went on and they appeared to switch off the camera and mike. Then asked me how I felt which I explained the wisdom of facing a 32 with balls swinging in the wind.

It played on the 6PM news and the Next Morning Every Word!

That is one of the few mistakes I only made once.

The only good thing was since I was a minority in my neighborhood I was knighted as that crazy white boy , I never since had a problem, and gained many friends in that section of that Midwest city. Made standing in the butter and cheese lines a lot more fun a few years later.

Stephen,
Bingo.
Which was why the article had the result that it did.

When the press is there there is nothing off the record.
