I wasn't sure where to post this -- here or in Military forum -- but had to share LT COL West's comments and a recent WaPo poll about the pee incident...
“I have sat back and assessed the incident with the video of our Marines urinating on Taliban corpses. I do not recall any self-righteous indignation when our Delta snipers Shugart and Gordon had their bodies dragged through Mogadishu. Neither do I recall media outrage and condemnation of our Blackwater security contractors being killed, their bodies burned, and hung from a bridge in Fallujah.
“All these over-emotional pundits and armchair quarterbacks need to chill. Does anyone remember the two Soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division who were beheaded and gutted in Iraq?
“The Marines were wrong. Give them a maximum punishment under field grade level Article 15 (non-judicial punishment), place a General Officer level letter of reprimand in their personnel file, and have them in full dress uniform stand before their Battalion, each personally apologize to God, Country, and Corps videotaped and conclude by singing the full US Marine Corps Hymn without a teleprompter.
“As for everyone else, unless you have been shot at by the Taliban, shut your mouth, war is hell.”
Also .. the Washington Post asked readers “What was your reaction to the video that appeared to show Marines urinating on three Afghan corpses?”
So far, with over 31,000 votes cast, here's how the responses break down:
It's an unacceptable desecration - 11%
It's an embarrassment - 7%
It's not surprising -- things like this happen in war - 82%
NJP; Office Hours with Bagels and hot coffee. Or 3 hots and a cot and a lecture from a Major. He can have a bagel as well even toasted since you don't get electricity at your hide. '
as far as the armchair Xbox warriors who want to hang the ones who have their back.
Field Day and no bagels in E St Louis. No escort until they request the Marines they wanted to fry.

Speaking as a Marine Master Gunnery Sergeant currently in Afghanistan, I can understand why they did what they did. However, we as Marines, are above the trash we have to take out and as such, must behave accordingly. Regardless of the stress we feel or cruelty of our own we witness, we are honorable men and women of the United States Marine Corps and the disgusting act of these Marines should not go unpunished, so with that being said, I wholeheartedly agree with the Lt. Colonel.
I feel ya Cappy and I'm with you.
Although I cannot condone what they did and have higher expectations of The Corps, I agree that the politically correct media should give equal time to the horrors and insults our troops must endure. The level of frustration that brought this act about had to be high. That being said, it is always better to take a moral high ground and not stoop to the level of adversary.
Always remember...we are BETTER!
What I want to know is, who released the video? Another political stunt to bash the military? Give me a break. These are young people under the stress of being murdered themselves. Who knows how long they were in a firefight with the very same smut they were pissing on. I'm not condoning it, but will not condemn them either. OOH-RAH! Semper Fi
I concur Lt. Col. West.
