A Snippet of History Regarding the Chaplain

“When George Washington assumed command of the Continental Army at Cambridge, Massachusetts, chaplains were already present for duty. Washington could count fifteen chaplains serving with the twenty-three regiments gathered around Boston. The Continental Congress gave the chaplains its official recognition on 29 July l775, when it voted pay for various officers and enlisted personnel in the Continental Army not previously covered in its resolution of l6 July.” Nearly a year later General George Washington issued the following General Order:”

July 9, 1776
The Hon. Continental Congress having been pleased to allow a Chaplain to each Regiment, with the pay of Thirty-three Dollars and one third pr month—The Colonels or commanding officers of each regiment are directed to procure Chaplains accordingly; persons of good Characters and exemplary lives—To see that all inferior officers and soldiers pay them a suitable respect and attend carefully upon religious exercises. The blessing and protection of Heaven are at all times necessary but especially so in times of public distress and danger—The General hopes and trusts that every officer and man will endeavor to live and act as becomes a Christian soldier defending the dearest rights and liberties of his country. Signed, George Washington

The previous two post show the hearts of a veteran police officer and aspiring firefighter in different parts of the USA risking it all to save a child from fire and a  elderly couple from fire, we do what we have to even when our training might not have prepared us for the task. These two incidents happened in just the past few weeks but we often do not hear of these positive life saving exploits as they are often drowned out by "news". May God bless and protect all our homeland hero's. CH Ron

Harry Emerson Fosdick wrote about growing up in upstate New York, where one summer's day his mother sent him out to pick a quart of raspberries. "I dragged my feet in rebellion," he said, "and the can was filling very slowly. Then a new idea came: it would be fun to pick two quarts of raspberries and surprise her. I had so interesting a time picking two quarts to the utter amazement of the household, and they never forgot it. But alas, I have often forgotten the philosophy of it: we can change any situation by changing our attitude toward it ."

(emphasis mine) Have a blessed and safe day. CH Ron

For those who may have stood guard all night know this, in the Psalms David said, "In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, O LORD, will keep me safe" (4:8). Thanks for being vigilant and rest well. CH Ron
