I fell in love with whole idea of EMS in January of 1972 when I saw this interesting TV show. Yep, you guessed it! EMERGENCY! I was hooked! Ok, so the fact that I had a huge crush on Randolph Mantooth didn't hurt any!
Seriously though, while always fascinated with EMS I never had the courage to get involved until September 11th, 2001. I tell people that at 0959 hours my life changed forever. I sat in a conference room at work watching the news coverage on the big TV. I asked my friend (a former Vol FF and retired PO) if he thought the towers would stay standing. He shrugged and said "I don't know." Not even a minute later, the South tower collapsed and I felt my heart literally break. I knew that hundreds of ff's were lost and in that moment a thousand thoughts went through my mind. "How are they going to find them all? Their families just saw them die. Did anyone survive? Need to get SAR dogs there..." It hurt so badly inside that I knew I had to do something to help ease my pain. So I became involved in our county's Fire Auxiliary (an organization in place to assist the families of our fire fighters in need). Evenutally I went through the Citizens Fire Academy and discovered I loved it! At almost 40 years old and 30lbs overweight I knew I couldn't change careers so I stayed involved by joining our Citizens Fire Academy Alumni Association. Through this group I became certified as a 1st Aid/CPR/AED instructor and went through CERT training. I still continue to learn new things at our meetings.
A little bit over a year ago I joined the Georgia State Defense Force. We're an all volunteer military organization that reports to the Georgia DOD. We're used to augment and assist the GA National Guard as needed. I absolutely LOVE it!! My family thinks I'm crazy when every month I get dressed in my ACUs and spend a weekend at drill. Ahhh... they don't know what they're missing!
