Fallen:
I lay asleep, tucked soundly amidst my brothers, within my tiny cot.
How is it now my heart is races?
Runs?
Smile drawn wide, for the bay?
The once rolled bunkers over steal lined boots march rapidly up my trembling legs
Rubber hoses dangle in their lonesome
Steal doors draw shut.
Truck two proudly hallowed in darkened summer nights
Submerged by rising fog spewing from the sewers
Illuminated in scurrying red and blue.
Horns and trumpets ring out, the sirens song drawing nearer
Flames dancing proud in the moonlit sky, smoke ballets to the heavens
The air horns roars
The heat draws nearer, warning intruders
My shoulder flashing
Red rings out
Wood screaming, power unleashed
Vicarious
Men are running, footsteps pounding, saw teeth shouting, Men are crying
The air runs thin
Consciousness joins acceptance
Men are running, fire crying
Darkness draws nearer, fear grows deeper
Time is failing, night is falling, light is drawing in.
Now midnight shoes shuffle solemnly down the carpet walkway,
Not my Day Boots
Bunker Boots
Steal Lined Work boots
Not my usual pair at all.
These shoes are special,
Not worn without consideration.
The carpet falls out
Grass bows solemnly beneath my heal,
a temporary footprint in a field of
souls
I must look up at what lie before me,
The time has come for my head to climb,
razor wire bonds toes and eyes
with thoughts of what lie beneath these black shoes,
What soon will lie
Beneath them.
Tears fall,
Dotting polished black shoes in
Lonesome pride

It's funny I have spent a great deal of time in my life panning over who I am and what I want to become. In fact the only consistency therein this process was the idea that I am certain I want nothing more from this life than to leave it knowing that I have made a difference in just one person’s life. However it is clear to me now that the answer to this question is inevitable, and has been in my heart since the day I was born on January 10th, 1988. Before I continue I want to be clear. I do not want to be a hero. I am not searching for irrelevant and undeniably irrelevant media recognition. Concurrently I do not wish for a lifetime of praise for who I am and what I am destined to be, I just want to know that someone, If only one person, has been positively touched by my presence on this earth. I remember once when I was about six years old I went to visit my dad at work. It was the first time (at least the first I can remember) I ever got to go the firehouse. The night before I could hardily sleep for my anticipation was so great. When I arrived at the fire house that morning I remember my dad taking me out to the bay and showing me the fire trucks. Surely my eyes were immensely wide as they glazed over in amazement. I was too young at that point to truly understand what exactly it is my father does, but I could feel in my heart and soul it was something amazing. I was almost brought to tears by my sense of pure joy, pride, and amazement. Just two weekends ago nearly 10 years later I made the same trip to the firehouse, only this time I drove myself. This must have been my hundredth trip by now. As I walked through the bay I realized that my sense of complete and totally childlike amazement was without deficiency equally intense. The pure majesty and power of not only the physical equipment before me, but the idea of the profession is purely and simply remarkable. I can think of nothing more I would be happier, or prouder to accomplish in my life than to one day I have the privilege to stand before my brothers as my father Firefighter Daniel John Toomey, and my brother Firefighter Dan Patrick Toomey place an Aurora Fire Department Badge atop my heart.
