BLESSINGS OF BEING A GRANDPARENT - FROM A RETIRED PROFESSIONAL FIREFIGHTER

Letter

Published: Tuesday, March 15, 2011 2:05 AM EDT

Blessings of being a grandparent

I feel blessed to be the grandparent (Pappy) of four beautiful grandchildren — Reaghan, Landen, Elijah and Quentin.

It has been said that grandchildren are God’s way of compensating us for growing old. Grandkids remind you of your of your own kids when they were little, making you reminisce about the wonderful times you experienced with them. A grandparent is a little bit… Continue

Call for doing away with State Fire Marshal's office heats up

If there is a fire, are kids safe in Kansas schools?

The state fire marshal said "no" dozens of times since last September and wrote fire code violations for more than thirty districts. At issue is a type of window on or above classroom doors that would allow smoke to travel from room to room in the event of a fire.

It could cost millions to fix.

Paul Larkin is communications director for Liberal Schools.

"Well I'm sure the… Continue

Spent Fuel in Japan

Update: links should be fixed now

The spent fuel pools near the Japanese reactors affected by the earthquake are a significant concern at this point. During the power generation process fission products build up in the fuel rods. In particular for the first several years after their removal from the reactor the radiation levels are fairly significant and the the rods can generate a fair amount of heat. Most reactors have a storage pool nearby in…

Radiation and Japan

There is a lot of information floating around the internet about radiation safety because of the events in Japan. Unfortunately much of it is incomplete or wrong. You have to be very careful where you get information from as many incomplete or wrong ideas tend to get spread out of fear. I'd like to try to clear up a few significant misconceptions and will provide references from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission or similar sources.

Radiation can cause both long term and short term… Continue

Radioactive safety data

Okay .. I'm not trying to be an alarmist and this is just my personal opinion but .. posting this as fyi in case things completely go south with Japanese nuclear reactors. Hopefully officials can contain all since structures have multiple safeguards, but sharing this in the event a complete failure or meltdown could potentially impact the west coast of North America. (Please note, I'm not talking about anything released to date .. there are no concerns with that whatsoever. Just thinking worse… Continue
