Friday Fotos: Twinkle, Twinkle Little… Glowworm?

There are so many glowworms that live in New Zealand’s Waitomo caves visitors will feel like they’re looking up at a night sky rather than cave walls.

The 300 cave system has been around for millions of years, and the starry night vibe is there thanks to the Arachnocampa…

Public Safety Workers and Stress: Training is Part of the Solution

Day after day our nation’s public safety workers put their lives on the line to keep its citizens safe—but at what cost? Law enforcement officers, firefighters and emergency medical technicians have some of the most physically and psychologically stressful jobs in America (consistently ranking on’s annual Top 10 Most Stressful Jobs list), and over time that…

BOSTON; The story I want to hear........

I don't want to know his name. I don't want to see his face. I don't want to know his life's history, his back-story, who his family is, where he went to school, or what he liked to do in his spare time. I don't want to know what "cause", if any, he was fighting for. I don't want to know why he did it, or may have done... it, or what possessed him to carry out his actions. I don't want to know. Because that's what he really wants. I'll be damned if I'm going to give him what he…

Slain M.I.T. Officer

Into harms way; every hour of every day goes the Law Enforcement Officer. Often without ever stopping to think that their jobs may cost them their lives. Our prayers go out to these men and women that are willing to take this risk. To the family of

Officer Sean Collier; The M.I.T. Officer that lost his life in the line of duty we know that words can never replace the lost of your love one but we as a community of Brothers and Sisters in arms want you to know that we will miss him also. It… Continue

Friday Fotos: Um … oops … hazardous materials accidents (and a link to some safety tips)

Major chemical accidents like the recent fertilizer plant explosion in Texas seem most threatening because they often kill people outright, however it is the smaller, more routine accidents and spills that affect most people.

Some of the most common spills involve tanker trucks and railroad tankers containing gasoline, chlorine, acid, or other…

Explosion in Texas

With a heavy heart tonight I want to ask you all to pray for the lives lost in Texas this evening. From what I understand we have lost 1 police officer, and 5 firefighters from our responder family. Keep all of those responders in your thoughts.... The body count may rise. We understand that this job comes with its risk but it is never easy to lose one of your own.

Attack in Boston

The cowardly way those responsible for the attack in Boston is proof of the importance for situational awareness at all times and locations. I was proud to see such a great response by the First Responders in Boston in those minutes after the explosion. Their training paid off in spades. Take notice America, training is a necessary component to a great response in emergencies. Our hearts and our prayers go out to those touched by this awful event and our pride goes out to those that responded… Continue

Friday Fotos: Fire in the sky

With all recent rhetoric by North Korea about their potential nuclear capabilities, we felt this might be a good time to do a few posts about nuclear threats.

Richland District Community Emergency Response Team

Richland CERT was formed by myself in 2010 after the great flood of Nashville. Nashville Office of Emergency Management has been traning CERT team members for many years but for some reason those on West side of Nashville had never formed a team. In the flood of 2010 we lost several of our neighboros on my side of town. Any number was unacceptable! I contacted the Office of Emergency Management for the names of those in West Nashville that had already completed the training and organized the…

Tax Refund Thefts On The Rise

You’re not the only one waiting for your tax refund. Scammers are looking for it too. In fact, every year there are more and more scams designed to steal tax refunds.
