US Troops Outnumber Taliban 12-1

There are already more than 100,000 international troops in Afghanistan working with 200,000 Afghan security forces and police. It adds up to a 12-1 numerical advantage over Taliban rebels, but it hasn't led to anything close to victory.

Now, the top U.S. and NATO commander in Afghanistan is asking for tens of thousands more troops to stem the escalating insurgency, raising the question of how many more troops it would take to succeed.

The commander, Gen.… Continue

U.S. Fire Administration Kicks off Public Fire Safety Campaign On Home Smoke Alarms and Residential Fire Sprinklers

The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) today launched an effort to encourage everyone to install and maintain home smoke alarms and, if possible, sprinklers. More than 3,000 people die in home fires each year, and the majority of them have no working smoke alarm. To prevent these deaths, the USFA, a division of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is sponsoring the nationwide Install. Inspect. Protect. Boy Saves Family With Smoke Detectors-Hagerstown residents are eligible for free smoke alarms.

Firefighters are crediting a Hagerstown boy with saving his entire family, by doing exactly what he learned in school.

Alonso Jimenez learned about fire safety when he took a trip to the Children's Safety Village of Washington County.

When he came home and checked his family's smoke detectors, he discovered they didn't work.

He hounded his parents to get new ones, and nine months after they did, his house caught fire.

Now firefighters are calling… Continue
