Halifax Fire Destroys Apartments and Restaurants

A stubborn blaze that kept 40 firefighters busy for hours destroyed several apartments and damaged three restaurants in downtown Halifax on Tuesday.
Residents at 5167 South St. saw smoke and called the Halifax regional fire service just after 8 a.m.
"Our first arriving firefighters did encounter heavy smoke on the second and third floor," Halifax fire service spokesman Dave Meldrum said at the scene.
At the time, he said, no residents were in the three-floor brick building that was built in 1870 and once housed Malachy Bowes Daly — Nova Scotia’s lieutenant governor from 1890-1900.

At the time, he said, no residents were in the three-floor brick building that was built in 1870 and once housed Malachy Bowes Daly — Nova Scotia’s lieutenant governor from 1890 to 1900.
Some hose teams entered the building and some worked from the rooftop. Other firefighters went inside the Taj Mahal restaurant next door to ensure the fire didn’t spread there.
The brick building housing the Taj Mahal shared an open attic with several other addresses. Firefighters cut into the roof and hosed down some spots to prevent the flames from spreading.
"The common attic is a huge concern," Mr. Meldrum said at one point.
Firefighters shut down the propane supply to the restaurant and two others — Cafe Chianti and Tomasino’s — and had Nova Scotia Power cut the electrical supply to the area. Thousands of customers were without power at 9 a.m., but most had it restored within an hour.
Flames were still sprouting from the building after 10:30 a.m. The fire was under control at 11:30 a.m. and was considered completely out by early afternoon. But crews were back battling flames at about 4:30 p.m.
"They reported fire on all three floors of the building," Mr. Meldrum said shortly after 5 p.m.
Being called back is not all that unusual, he said.
"In any building fire, it can remain hidden and smouldering in void spaces, the spaces between walls and floors," he said.
"If you give it enough time, it can rekindle, that’s why we keep a watch on these properties."
Platoon Chief Chuck Bezanson said crews finished up for the night at 7 p.m. Security was to remain on the site throughout the night and the investigation into the cause of the fire is to begin today.
Because the fire was concentrated near the top of the apartment building, the restaurants suffered mostly water and smoke damage. Still, all three had some fire damage and firefighters had to tear down parts of the ceiling inside Cafe Chianti. Firefighters broke all the front windows at the Taj Mahal to prevent the heat and smoke inside from getting too severe.
A couple weren’t in their apartment when the fire started, but the couple’s mother was visiting. She called them to say she smelled smoke, but they told her it was likely from a restaurant.
She called them back a few minutes later, Mr. Bolger said.
"The smoke seemed to be coming . . . between the floors," he said she told him.
The men called 911 and their visitor ran to a neighbour, who warned other tenants.
The couple own an exotic pet business, NL Jungle Pets in Dartmouth. They had all their year-end paperwork in the apartment and were preparing to do their annual accounting. The documents, and a nearby computer, were sitting in front of a bay window and were likely destroyed by water pumped into their apartment through the window.
Another tenant, Amy Theriault, 30, has enjoyed living the last four years in her downtown apartment that has tall ceilings, wood floors and big bay windows that look over Cornwallis Park.
"It’s an awesome place," she said. "I always, in the back of my mind, wondered if it would go up in flames one day, just because of all the restaurants downstairs and it’s an old place."
Ms. Theriault didn’t know how many of her possessions were damaged. Her apartment is on the top floor next to the main fire site, and she said the amount of damage would depend on how much flame, smoke and water got through the common attic into her apartment.
Jan Wicha, the owner of Cafe Chianti, arrived at work at 8:30 a.m. and saw the fire trucks, smoke and flames.
He did not know how severe the damage was, but he expected his staff of 20 would have some time off.
"We have some insurance," he said. "Hopefully it will cover the fire."
The building is owned by Galaxy Properties Ltd., whose listed directors include Anthony, Sabah and Elias Metlej.
Mr. Meldrum thinks the building can be salvaged but said an engineer’s scrutiny would be required.
The Westin Nova Scotian hotel, just a stone’s throw away, created an emergency relief centre for at least 23 displaced tenants from 18 units and had coffee and sandwiches available by 10 a.m.
The Red Cross provided clothing, food, personal-care items and temporary accommodation for those in need, a news release said. The release also said some pets from the building had not been accounted for by late Tuesday afternoon.
Lauren Oostveen of the Nova Scotia Archives said developer Henry Peters built the building in the 19th century to be private residences, and it would have been considered prime real estate.
She said some of its early residents included Judge Mortimer Jackson, the U.S. consul in Halifax, and Mr. Daly.
