Those 12 stations house 12 Fire Engines, 3 Truck Companies, 2 Battalion Chiefs, and the Chief's Operator. Fire Engines and Fire Trucks are very different apparatus with very different objections on scene of an emergency. A Fire Engine is staffed with 3 firefighters, and is responsible for pulling a hoseline and attacking the fire (among other things). A Fire Truck is staffed with 4 firefighters, and is responsible for Vertical Ventilation and Search & Rescue. It is standard practice for our firefighters on the Truck so 'split their crew,' sending two to conduct vertical ventilation and two to conduct a search of the structure.

On May 12th, 2020, Stockton Firefighters responded to a working 2 story apartment fire on Liberty Way. This is video capture from 3 different firefighters on scene, all of which were assigned to Truck 4. Two of the perspectives follow the Search Group, as they rapidly conduct a search of the second floor and begin opening access to the attic fire. A final perspective follows the Vent Group, who climb to the roof of the structure and provide vertical ventilation.

The fire appears to have originated outside the structure, and quickly spread from 1st story to 2nd story patio- and then into the attic. The firefighters begin to 'drop ceiling' in order to expose and extinguish the fire. The apartment changes from clear to blacked out with smoke. The black smoke can indicate an incomplete burn. In this case, the particles in the smoke become a fuel and light off when mixed with air. The wind on that day creates unusual fire behavior, captured by these firefighters.

The fire required a 2nd alarm response, and was knocked down within 20 minutes of the initial 9-1-1 call. Firefighters would remain on scene for more than an hour to extinguish hotspots, overhaul, and conduct an investigation.

The Stockton Fire Department consists of 12 firehouses, and protects 350,000 people. Stockton Firefighters responded to more than 51,000 emergencies in 2019, including an average of one working structure fire a day.

We thank you for your views, support, feedback, and comments.
