Several unhappy Pontiac firefighters received pink layoff slips by mail on Dec. 24.
“I had heard they were mailed out,” said one firefighter, who asked not to be named and said he had not yet received one.
He complained about the timing of the notices, right on Christmas Eve.“So many have wives and children,” he said.
“It puts so much pressure on the guys.”
The email from the fire department read, “All members of the Pontiac Fire Department have received notice of termination. These notices arrived by mail today (December 24, 2011) on christmas eve.
“The notices state that they have also enclosed an application for employment to Waterford Township Fire Department and we are ‘encouraged to apply although employment is not guaranteed.’
“On Thursday the 22nd, Emergency Manager Lou Schimmel presented the pontiac firefighters union with a formal written offer to voluntarily agree to be absorbed by waterford township fire department or be terminated.
“He said he had hoped the pontiac firefighters union would ratify the agreement by this coming monday the 26th and have waterford in the city by Feb.1 2012.
“The union has yet to meet and discuss the offer due to the holidays and mr. Schimmel was informed of that and stated he understood.
