2023 Firefighter-Paramedic Hiring Process

The City of Bloomington Firefighter-Paramedics are hard-working, progressive, and dedicated individuals. We consider each member of the department more than an employee; we consider them part of the family. We have great pay, benefits and will train you to become a Firefighter-Paramedic. Minimum qualifications include:

o Minimum age of 21 at date of hire.

o Be under age 35 unless otherwise exempt by statute.

o High school diploma or equivalent.

o Valid driver’s license.

o Ability to pass each phase of the Firefighter examination process.

o Must have a current CPAT card by January 4, 2024.

o Must become a licensed Illinois paramedic within three years of hire.

Step 1: Application - deadline 12/27/2023

• Submit Application
• College transcripts, DD214 and applicable licenses are required for preference points.
• Upload copy of CPAT card if you have one

Step 2: Written Exam - deadline 12/27/2023

• Sign up for FREE written exam (in-person and virtual options)

Step 3: CPAT - deadline 01/04/2023

• Register for your test (12/05, 12/16 or 01/03).
• Learn more about the CPAT and testing options.

Step 4: In-Person Interview and Orientation 12/11/2023 – 1/3/2023

Step 5: Backgrounds 1/8/2023 - 3/1/2023

Step 6: 15 CONDITIONAL JOB OFFERS – EARLY MARCH

Step 6a: Physical and Drug Screen – Early March

Step 6b: Psychological Exam – Early March

Final Eligibility List and Appointment

Preference points will be awarded for Veterans, Paramedic Licenses or Education. Preference points will be added to the Final Eligibility List which will be posted. Openings on the fire department are filled in the order on the list. Those offered a position in the fire department must satisfactorily pass a background investigation, medical and psychological examination.
