Unusual Fire Death Involved Police Training - LODD

Posted by Capt. Lewis - April 21, 2024 9:54 PM

Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff Freddy Flores has Died in the Line of Duty from injuries sustained six months earlier as the result of a fire inside a mobile shooting range at the Pitchess Detention Center in Castaic.

He and another deputy were inside the mobile shooting range, built inside a 53-foot semi-trailer when "an equipment malfunction ignited a fire" at about 0930 hours on October 10, 2023. They both suffered severe burns before being rescued by fellow deputies and transported to a local hospital. Deputy Flores succumbed to his injuries yesterday, April 20, 2024.

When Firefighters arrived at the facility, the two injured/burned deputies had already been taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital by other deputies. The LA County Firefighters worked throughout that morning on the stubborn fire within the trailer, with the unexploded ammunition hampering the effort. The fire was eventually knocked at 1320 hours and was contained to that single mobile trailer.

Deputy Flores had served with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department for 20 years. He is survived by his wife, children, parents and siblings. Our condolences to all those affected. Rest in Peace.
