Katy, Texas Commercial building fire June 29th.

Yesterday a local fire photographer sent me some great pictures of the guys from my fire department at the above incident. You can see them on his website here, http://tinyurl.com/mslbwf I was totally bumed that I wasn't on this run. I felt like a caged tiger knowing guys, and gals that I served with and cared about were fighting a fire this size, and I wasn't there. It was in the hottest part of the day, in what has been a historically hot Houston summer. Anyway the pictures are so cool I had t… Continue

Lee County pays millions in overtime

Lee County’s administrators and elected officials are paying millions in taxpayer dollars for employees to work beyond 40 hours a week.

Officials are struggling to hold down overtime pay as tightened budgets have left work staffs depleted.

Local governments in Lee County paid almost 2,500 employees about $9.4 million in overtime during the 2008 fiscal year.

Most came from an understaffed public safety department where overtime is largely built into paramedic and emergency personnel contracts.… Continue

FREEDOM ISN'T FREE!

AMERICAN HEROES!

* Hometown: Kilgore, TX
* Awarded: The Silver Star

When Army Specialist Aaron Davis found out he was receiving the Silver Star for his outstanding bravery on the battlefield, he tried to turn it down.

“I felt like I didn’t want all the attention because I didn’t do anything for attention,” said Davis.

Davis, who was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry, 173 Airborne Brigade Combat Team, was serving as an infantryman during his deployment in Afghanistan.

On July 13, 2008, Davis and his unit were attacked by 200 or more Taliban fighters while they were patrolling an area. During the ensuing firefight, Davis was hit with shrapnel to his right leg from a rock-propelled grenade. (story continues here)
