FREEDOM ISN'T FREE!

At USFRA, we value the sacrifices men and women give every day in the service of our great country. Because of our genuine appreciation we have for our brave soldiers, we have decided to adopt a "Soldier of the Month." Each month we will choose a soldier who we want to recognize for his/her service in protecting our freedom. We will send these soldiers care packages that include non-perishable food items, personal care items, toys for children overseas, and other items that will help our heroes feel a little closer to home. These items we're donating are given from individual firefighters, police officers and civilians within our association, because we, as Patriotic Americans, do care. This is not a corporate effort and certainly not required of our members, but this is one way we, at USFRA, can show we really do "Support Our Troops."

If your group or organization would like to send care packages to our brave men and women overseas, please click on one of the banners below.

Firefighting Tactics :: Vertical Ventilation

When I was asked to be a moderator of this section of forums, I was also asked to post some interesting and thought provoking subjects. So here goes.. I am about to make a statement that you night find quite controversial and thats what I am after. I would like for you to first tell me whether you agree or dis-agree with the statement and second tell me why. Before you answer though, I would like for you to think about the "time" element.

Statement: "Vertical ventilation operations except for potential backdraft situations, are a waste of time and have very little positive impact on the interior attack crew, search and rescue crew or trapped victims".

Let me hear from you..

Depending on witness accounts I would either begin exterior ventalation, or send in a fast attack team (are there reports of vitims inside?) Good point too brother, no one has bothered to check to see if anyone is inside. In the initial post I stated that there is a car in the driveway, and the doors are locked....??? Could that mean someone is inside? It could, but no one has initiated a search for possible occupants yet.

Good Point Brother.

you could also have your first team make entry with a thermal imaging camera and do their search and if they find no one home then us the camera to find the heat source causing the smoke. the second team can advance the hand line to the door and stand by. Id also have the fiirst team in their search kill the power in the house incase it is electrical in nature. have the ladder crew start positive pressure ventilation in my opinion I would not vent the roof because we do not know what the cause of smoke is and would not want to cause more damage to the house if not necessary. Once the heat source is located then you'll know what you'll have to do to extinguish the fire. Blob8

Thats what I was looking for, use of the TIC to find the source. Great job turk! Notworthy
You find the heat source coming from the wall around the chimney pipe. They use a pellet stove to supplement their heat source and the pipe goes directly through the wall above the stove. Its all hot around the pipe, about 600-800 degrees on th TIC. The heat gets worse with the PPV use.

Can You believe This One ?

We had a case in the Houston area the other day that even seasoned law enforcement officers are having a hard time believing. The other day two juveniles were arrested after they dug up a body at a local cemetery. They then allegedly decapitated the corpse, and used the skull as a bong to smoke marijuana. The original investigating officer said the whole story was so absurd that he didn't even belive it until he located and interviewed the second suspect. Anybody else ever hear of anything like… Continue
