Meet Corporal Kevin Luljack - Pinellas County

Posted by Fyre Walker - December 12, 2022 11:07 PM

“I truly enjoy being the FTO Corporal and having a part of assisting in the training of new recruits. This time is crucial in ensuring that the jail has new members who can pick up where we leave off at the end of our careers.”

Corporal Kevin Luljack works in the North Division of the jail in the Healthcare Building. Among many responsibilities, he serves the needs of the housing deputies on his wing and escorts inmates, attorneys, and civilian personnel to various destinations within the facility. He’s very serious about maintaining the teamwork spirit of the unit, checking on his coworkers and seeing where he can assist them regularly. Another role of the corporal rank is relieving deputies when they take their lunch. As he handles their assigned posts while they are away he takes this time to speak with the inmates, build relationships, and learn about the specific area’s needs and concerns. “Working in the Healthcare building is quite different from any other post in the jail. Day to day work with inmates that require a lot medical care has become an interesting and challenging job all at the same time.

Understanding the individual needs of the inmates, maintaining their safety, as well as ensuring the safety of medical and detention staff is paramount.” Corporal Luljack is also a field training officer (FTO) for the division, working with new deputy recruits. “While the recruits are here, they will work each different housing area with the FTO deputy, gaining experience through hands-on training and interactions with the inmate population. My job is to make sure they understand the safest way to handle each situation. This experience is vital in ensuring the recruits are ready to work on their own after completing the FTO program.” Corporal Luljack has worked in every division in the jail as both a deputy and supervisor. He’s also a member of the Critical Incident Stress Management Team where members respond to personnel who experience a traumatic event and require assistance to cope.

Before coming over to PCSO, Corporal Luljack was working with a different team – the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. He worked security for the team at Tropicana Field. This included working events like concerts that were held at the stadium when the team was away. He got to meet several notable baseball players including Wade Boggs, Jose Canseco, Greg Vaughn, and Fred McGriff and had to pleasure of escorting Hulk Hogan’s family to their seats at a concert.

He even got to witness a big moment in sports history. “My biggest highlight while working with the Rays was when I worked the home team dugout and got to witness Wade Boggs collect his 3000th hit.”Off duty it’s still about the teams for him. A huge sports fan, he avidly watches the Green Bay Packers, Tampa Bay Rays, and the Tampa Bay Lightning. He also enjoys relaxing with a game of golf, spending time with the family, and being the DIY team when his wife finds a new project for the two of them to take on.Corporal Luljack thank you for being a part of the team that makes PCSO shine.
