FIREFIGHTER SHOT ON EMS RUN

Posted by Jesse James Jessup - March 22, 2024 1:28 PM

Update from APD: On Friday, March 22, 2024, at approximately 12:43 a.m., the Arlington Police Department responded to an apartment complex to conduct a welfare check. A resident called 911 and reported hearing children crying for an extended period of time in a neighboring apartment, calling for their mother to wake up.

APD officers, Arlington Fire Department personnel, and AMR personnel went to the apartment in question. Officers knocked on the door and announced their presence. No one answered – but they could hear children’s voices coming from inside the apartment continuing to call for their mother to wake up.

The officers continued to knock on the door and announce themselves for more than five minutes. Concerned that someone inside the apartment could be injured or in need of emergency medical attention, the first responders made the decision to force entry into the apartment. While AFD personnel used a breaching tool to try to pry the door open, APD officers continued to announce their presence.

A short time later, a single shot was fired from inside the apartment, striking one of the firefighters who was at the door.

All personnel immediately backed away from the apartment and took cover. The injured firefighter was able to retreat from the apartment on his own. He was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries. Medical staff has since indicated he is stable and alert this morning.

The Arlington Fire Department has identified the firefighter as Brady Weaver. The Arlington Police and Fire Departments ask the community to join them in praying for his full recovery.

No additional shots were fired. No one else was injured.

Officers gave commands for everyone inside the apartment to exit. A man, woman, and two children complied with those commands and came out of the apartment. The man, who we believe is the shooter, has been detained and is being questioned by detectives. Investigators will consult with the Tarrant County District Attorney’s Office to determine whether criminal charges should be filed.

The investigation is ongoing.
